Bushman

Real name Dwight Duncan Bushman was born in Prospect Beach, St. Thomas, Jamaica in 1973, he was brought up as a Rastafarian. As a teenager he worked as a selector going under the name Junior Melody or sometimes Junior Buckley for the Black Star Line sound-system, he took part in several singing competitions and talent hunts in and around St. Thomas. Gaining a large local fan base, Junior Melody started to sing dub plates for local sound-systems such as Lee's Unlimited, Mello Construction, King Majesty and others. The glowing reviews Duncan received from the sound selectors and locals encouraged him to further his career by travelling to the recording studios of Kingston. He hitch-hiked his way there, and during a game of football at Arrows Dub plate studio he met Steely & Clevie. When he mentioned to them that he was a singer, they asked him to go Studio 2000, and there he recorded his first tracks. Their first song together was called "Grow Your Natty", which was followed by the hit "Call The Hearse". With plans for an album Steely wanted to change the name Junior Melody to Bushman. At first Duncan was unhappy with this name; he thought it was offensive to him because he came from the country, until he investigated the name to learn that 'Bushman' was an African name for medicine man. "Call The Hearse" became a big success in Jamaica, and was followed by "Rude Boy Life" and his first album, Nyah Man Chant released in 1997. Jamaican artist Bushman has a fantastic singing voice reminiscent of the great dancehall singer Frankie Paul. Total Commitment brings together most of the singles Bushman recorded for producer King Jammy. This album is listed under roots, as the majority, although not all the tracks are roots, Bushman performs songs in a variety of styles including dancehall on Mr Gunis, and Lovers Rock on Afraid of Commitment. One of my all time favourite tracks is the memorable roots song Fire Bun a Weak Heart. All in all, with not one bad track, this is one of the best albums you will hear.
