Culture Joseph Hill

Joseph Hill and Culture developed a standing as a performing group after an appearance at the 'One Love Peace Concert' in 1978, and were soon touring the United States, Europe and Africa. In recent years the group continued to perform at least one hundred concerts each year with Hill's wife Pauline working as road manager. Hill had a great presence on stage; at times he would spontaneously direct his band to rearrange songs. He commented on Jamaican history and current political issues, in his lyrics. Hill often explored how the legacy of slavery continued to have an influence on Jamaican citizens. The album Payday is a classic example of roots at its best. With a slightly different sound, than other Culture albums, yet still unmistakably Culture. The unique voice of Joseph Hill is on top form, while the backing is tight. The first and title track "Payday" instantly grabs your attention with a lively baseline that makes it impossible to stand still. Track 5 Do Something For Yourself, the rhythm and bass is the driving the beat, with a sprinkling of horns added to the mix, giving rise to a classic song. The catchy rhythm of "The Boss" is another great track that just makes you feel like dancing. Unlike some albums you will not find yourself wanting to skip any tracks, which makes this album great value. This album should be part of every roots fans collection. Lead singer Joseph Hill always had a unique way of getting a serious message across whilst still having a smile on his face. He will be sadly missed. But we still have his music.
