Born Horace Hinds Kingston Jamaica he made his first single in 1967 for producer Phil Pratt, entitled "This is a Black Man's Country" which failed to be a success. Then in 1970 successfully auditioned at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, as a duo along with Frank Melody, a few days later he auditioned on his own and Dodd decided Hinds should make records under the name Horace Andy, partially to exploit the popularity of Bob Andy at the time, and also to avoid associations with his cousin, Justin Hinds. "Got To Be Sure", the song he had auditioned with, became his first release for Studio One. One of Andy's most well-known songs, "Skylarking", was first released on Dodd's Jamaica Today compilation album; it was later released as a single, reaching the top the Jamaican charts. Andy had another Jamaican number one single in 1973 with "Children of Israel". Horace Andy's 1978 album Pure Ranking had foreseen the rise in popularity of dancehall reggae, and he was a key player in developing the genre. Andy has a light, and easy on the ear singing voice, which has been his trademark throughout the years. If you do not have any Horace Andy in your collection then Skylarking would be the perfect album to start with as it is a compilation of some of his best tracks, including many hit songs that Horace Andy has made in his long career in roots music.
